REVIEW: Catch Fire – ‘A Love That I Still Miss’ EP

Having listened to this for the first time during my train journey home, its quite an easy listen if you’re a firm pop punk fan. Although Catch Fire are a young band they have created a tight collection of incredible, relatable pop punk tracks. Its a plethora of your essential self doubt, anxiety, love and even hate, all the things that combine to create a relatable collection of pop punk tracks.

From the word go this EP is tight and polished for a young band, and this being their second EP, I have to say I’m impressed. It’s nice to have an intro to an EP, I always appreciate a little taste of what a bands capable of musically without a vocalist.

From the second track, Curfew you can see why these guys have developed quite a following, vocalist Miles Kent has a voice made for pop punk, I’d say reminiscent of Sam Thompson from Me Vs Hero (remember them?). The track offers a great sing along aspect with its catchy lyrics, and a great breakdown, its the sugar and spice of what makes a great pop punk track.

From these first two tracks you get the angst and feel of what this EP is about. It offers an insight into the minds and feel of what the Nottingham band have been through to get here. Once you hit Lucid even with it being a mere 1 minute 12 seconds, which shows their ability to slow it down. This leading into Reality is where you know this band will go far. They capture perfectly the harshness of dreams and even more so reality.

Guilty As Charged is something everyone can relate to, feeling guilty for feeling happy, when you know you’ve done what was right for you. It shows both sides of the band, you get an absolute banger with a great riff and a toned down break all in one track. You can see why they chose this as a single, it perfectly showcases what the band have to offer, whilst leaving you wanting more.

The track that gives the EP its name Thin Ice has one of the best lyrics I’ve heard in a while; “And I’ll always be your fucking doormat but at least you had a use for me…” I love when a lyric like that catches you off guard. And its moments like that along with the changes of pace that demonstrate the young band’s creativity.

All in all if you’re a fan of the likes of Neck Deep, Wstr and Trash Boat you’ll like this band, if like me you’re old enough to remember the likes of Me VS Hero you’ll like this band, as they’re another great offering that the UK pop punk scene has produced. That being said theres a lot of bands that have come out which personally I’m not the biggest fan of, but these guys for me are just a bit ahead, as this EP is so well produced and confident. Catch Fire although ticking all the pop punk genre boxes, yet I feel as though they’ll set themselves apart with a full length, which you can gather from how creative, well written and polished these 7 tracks are.
